It is bounded on the north by the\u00a0Sudhanoti District\u00a0and the\u00a0Poonch District, on the north-east by the\u00a0Poonch District\u00a0of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, on the south by the\u00a0Mirpur\u00a0and\u00a0Bhimber\u00a0districts, and on the west by the\u00a0Rawalpindi District\u00a0on\u00a0Pakistan&#8217;s\u00a0Punjab Province. Kotli is the biggest district of\u00a0Azad Kashmir\u00a0by population and the second biggest by land area, after the\u00a0Neelum District. The district headquarters is the city of\u00a0Kotli.\u00a0The main native languages are\u00a0Pahari\u00a0(estimated to be spoken by just under two thirds of the population), and\u00a0Gujari\u00a0(spoken by about a third of the population).<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Administrative_divisions\" class=\"mw-headline\" style=\"color: #008000;\">Administrative divisions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Kotli District was previously a subdivision of the\u00a0Mirpur District\u00a0until 1975.<sup id=\"cite_ref-AJK_3-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0Before 1947, it was part of the Jammu area of\u00a0Jammu and Kashmir. The district is divided into five\u00a0tehsils:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h5>Kotli Tehsil<sup id=\"cite_ref-AJK_3-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h5>Charhoi Tehsil<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h5>Sehnsa Tehsil<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h5>Fatehpur Nakyal Tehsil<sup id=\"cite_ref-AJK_3-3\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h5>Khuiratta Tehsil<sup id=\"cite_ref-AJK_3-4\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dilyan Jattan Tehsil<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Education\" class=\"mw-headline\" style=\"color: #008000;\">Education<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the\u00a0Pakistan District Education Ranking\u00a02017, a report by\u00a0Alif Ailaan, the Kotli District stands at number 7 nationally relating to education, with a score of 73.68. The learning score stands at 85.67 and gender parity is at 93.45.<\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><sup id=\"cite_ref-report_6-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>According to the same report, the Kotli District is ranked at 119 nationally, with a learning score of 35.47 and a retention score of 35.36.<sup id=\"cite_ref-report_6-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0The learning score is low because of a lack of quality teachers and proper teacher training.
