Due to its location, it became known as the Gateway to Kashmir (Bab-e-Kashmir).<\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\">During the\u00a01947 Poonch rebellion\u00a0and subsequent\u00a0Indo-Pakistani War of 1947\u20131948\u00a0Bhimber was captured by the Azad Kashmir rebels supported by\u00a0Pakistan\u00a0and became a part of the\u00a0Azad Kashmir.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Previously, Bhimber was a tehsil of the\u00a0Mirpur District\u00a0but was elevated to district status in 1996.<sup id=\"cite_ref-AJK_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span id=\"Location\" class=\"mw-headline\" style=\"color: #003300;\">Location<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Bhimber District is bounded on the north by the\u00a0Kotli District, on the east by the\u00a0Rajouri District\u00a0and the\u00a0Jammu District\u00a0of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, on the south by the\u00a0Gujrat District\u00a0of\u00a0Pakistan&#8217;s\u00a0Punjab Province, and on the west by the\u00a0Mirpur District. The town of\u00a0Bhimber\u00a0is 50\u00a0km from the city of\u00a0Mirpur.<\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Demography\" class=\"mw-headline\" style=\"color: #003300;\">Demography<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the\u00a02017 census, the population of the district is 420,624.<sup id=\"cite_ref-5\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\">The main native languages are\u00a0Punjabi\u00a0(according to a rough estimate, spoken by 35% of the population),\u00a0Pahari-Pothwari\u00a0(30%),\u00a0Dogri\u00a0(30%) and\u00a0Gujari\u00a0(5%).<sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-Shakil_2012_7-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>Urdu\u00a0language has &#8216;official&#8217; status.<\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span id=\"Education\" class=\"mw-headline\" style=\"color: #003300;\">Education<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the Alif Ailaan Pakistan District Education Rankings 2015, the Bhimber District ranked 10th out of 145 districts in Pakistan and its two dependent territories in terms of education.
