Previously part of\u00a0Poonch District, Bagh was established as a separate district in 1988.<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/h6>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Bagh District is bounded on the north by the\u00a0Muzaffarabad District, the\u00a0Hattian Bala District, and the\u00a0Baramulla District\u00a0of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, on the east by the\u00a0Haveli District, on the south by the Poonch District, and on the west by the\u00a0Rawalpindi District\u00a0of Pakistan&#8217;s\u00a0Punjab Province. The total area of the district is 770 square kilometers.<sup id=\"cite_ref-5\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0The Bagh District is linked to the\u00a0Muzaffarabad District\u00a0by two roads, one via\u00a0Sudhan Gali\u00a0(80\u00a0km) and the other via\u00a0Kohala\u00a0(97\u00a0km). The district headquarters is the city of Bagh, which is situated 46\u00a0km from\u00a0Rawalakot. It is said that a\u00a0<i>bagh<\/i>\u00a0(garden) was set up by a landowner where the premises of the Forest Department are now located. The area is part of the Lesser Himalayas zone. The main mountain range in the district is the Pir Panjal.<\/h6>\n<h6><\/h6>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Haji-Pir Pass is situated at a height of 3421 meters above sea level. The general elevation is between 1500 and 2500 meters above sea level. The mountains are generally covered with coniferous forests. The main river in the district is the Mahl Nala, but numerous other rivulets also flow in the district.<sup id=\"cite_ref-ReferenceA_10-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/h6>\n<h6><\/h6>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span id=\"Climate\" class=\"mw-headline\" style=\"color: #003300;\">Climate<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: justify;\">The climate of the district varies with altitude. The temperature generally remains between 2\u00a0\u00b0C and 40\u00a0\u00b0C. The main eastern part of the district is very cold in the winter and moderate in the summer. However, the lower valleys, the localities bordering Bagh at Kohala and its adjoining areas (Mongbajri and Ajra-Bagh) remain cold in the winter and hot in the summer. May, June, and July are the hottest months. The maximum and minimum temperatures during the month of June are about 40\u00a0\u00b0C and 22\u00a0\u00b0C, respectively. December, January, and February are the coldest months. The maximum temperature in January is about 16\u00a0\u00b0C, and the minimum temperature is 3\u00a0\u00b0C. Annual rainfall is about 1,500 millimetres (59\u00a0in).<sup id=\"cite_ref-ReferenceA_10-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/h6>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span id=\"Demography\" class=\"mw-headline\" style=\"color: #003300;\">Demography<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: justify;\">The total population of the district according to the\u00a02017 census\u00a0is 371,919.<sup id=\"cite_ref-11\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/h6>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: justify;\">The main language of the district is\u00a0Pahari, which is estimated to be native to around 95% of the inhabitants.\u00a0The Pahari dialect spoken in Bagh is closely related to the dialect spoken to the north in the\u00a0Muzaffarabad\u00a0(84% shared basic vocabulary) and to the core Pahari varieties spoken to the south-west in the\u00a0Galyat\u00a0region around\u00a0Murree\u00a0(86\u201388%).<sup id=\"cite_ref-14\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0There are also small groups of speakers of\u00a0Gujari\u00a0and\u00a0Kashmiri.<sup id=\"cite_ref-SYB2020_12-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-Shakil_2012_13-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/h6>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/h6>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span id=\"Education\" class=\"mw-headline\" style=\"color: #003300;\">Education<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the\u00a0Pakistan District Education Ranking\u00a02017, a report by\u00a0Alif Ailaan, the Bagh District is ranked at number 5 nationally in the ranking related to education, with an education score of 73.99. The learning score is at 85.42, with a gender parity score of 88.32.<sup id=\"cite_ref-alifailaan_15-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/h6>\n<h6><\/h6>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: justify;\">The school infrastructure score of the Bagh District is 28.32, giving Bagh a national rank of 126.<sup id=\"cite_ref-alifailaan_15-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0School infrastructure is a major problem in all of Azad Kashmir.
